What To Anticipate During Your Diagnostic Session
Parent Consultation
Before your consultation, you’ll be asked to complete a questionnaire covering various aspects of your child’s medical, developmental, social-emotional, and behavioral background. During the session, you’ll meet with our diagnostician, who will delve into your child’s developmental history using the Autism Diagnostic Inventory, Revised (ADI-R) and address any queries you may have about the assessment process.
Assessment and Review
Your child will undergo evaluation using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), a validated tool for accurately identifying autism. We’ll also assess adaptive behavior and social-emotional functioning. The duration of the assessment will depend on your child’s age and abilities. You’re welcome to accompany your child throughout the process, especially if they experience separation anxiety.
Recommendation Session
After the assessment, you’ll have a meeting with the diagnostician. They’ll provide you with a comprehensive report detailing your child’s developmental history, test outcomes, diagnostic conclusions, and recommendations for future interventions. The diagnostician will thoroughly discuss these areas with you and address any questions you may have.
Understanding the Diagnostic Evaluation
After receiving a referral and confirming insurance coverage for your child, we will schedule the initial appointment. The duration of the developmental evaluation may differ depending on your child’s individual needs and the diagnostic method employed. Certain insurance providers may have preferences regarding the diagnostic tool for assessing ASD in children. On average, the assessment typically lasts between 1.5 to 3 hours.
Diagnostic FAQs
Once we have a referral and insurance verification for your child, we can set up the initial appointment. The time it takes to conduct the developmental evaluation varies from child to child as well as the diagnostic tool used. Some insurance companies have specific request for which diagnostic tool is used when assessing children for ASD. The average time to conduct the assessment varies from 1.5-3 hours.
After obtaining the referral and verifying insurance, the evaluation process usually lasts 1-2 weeks.
ABA services are typically covered by insurance companies upon confirmation of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis. If your child doesn’t have an ASD diagnosis, you have the option to privately fund the services.
Following your child’s diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, our team will collaborate with your family to arrange Applied Behavior Analysis services. We’ll support your family in obtaining approval for a Functional Behavior Assessment, which involves evaluating the function of your child’s behavior. This assessment is the initial stage in crafting a comprehensive behavioral treatment plan.
Our Intake team will check your insurance coverage for you. A referral from your child’s doctor will be needed unless your family is paying out-of-pocket.
